On February 16, 2011, the Law Center’s Sonja Kerr joined parents and other advocates in imploring the School Reform Commission (SRC) to fight the state for more money for the School District of Philadelphia instead of accepting deep budget cuts. Ms. Kerr testified about the devastating effects the proposed cuts to school psychologists and nurses will have on students with disabilities. School psychologists are responsible for evaluating students for special education services. Without an adequate number of these specialists, students with disabilities will have to wait even longer to begin receiving the services they need. Given that the School District has high rates of asthma and Type 1 diabetes, cutting nursing services will also be “a recipe for disaster.”
