Standing Up for Pro Bono Advocacy and Civil Rights

The Public Interest Law Center has joined three amicus briefs—filed on April 11 and April 25, 2025—in cases challenging Executive Orders that target law firms WilmerHale, Jenner & Block, and Susman Godfrey LLP for their work. These Executive Orders represent a dangerous attempt to intimidate the legal community and silence advocacy for vulnerable communities.

The briefs were prepared by the national Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and joined by the Law Center and fellow affiliates in Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago, Mississippi, and San Francisco.

Since our founding as a Lawyers’ Committee affiliate in 1969, we have proudly partnered with private law firms to provide pro bono legal support that defends democracy, advances racial and economic justice, and protects fundamental rights. These Executive Orders threaten that vital work and the communities who depend on it.

We joined these briefs to affirm a simple truth: everyone deserves legal representation, and pro bono work must be protected.
