Pennsylvania Facing Lawsuit for Alleged Failure to Provide Voter Registration at Public Assistance Agencies

A coalition of national voting rights groups, including Project Vote and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law have filed suit against the Commonwealth for failing to comply with the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA).

The NVRA requires public assistance agencies to offer voter registration services as a method of ensuring that low-income residents are able to register to vote. Although the number of people applying for aid has been steadily increasing, the plaintiffs allege that the majority of those people are not offered voter registration services, and that many agencies do not even have registration forms available.
