On December 21, 2012, the Law Center’s Director, Jennifer Clarke, wrote to Senator Casey expressing the Law Center’s sorrow for the Sandy Hook tragedy and offering support to Senator Casey during the national call to action:
“On behalf of the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia, I write to thank you for the wisdom and leadership reflected in your December 17, 2012 statement regarding the Sandy Hook tragedy. We agree that a national response is required and that it must take into account of all of the factors, including ready access to semi-automatic weapons, that contributed to the tragedy.
For many years, the Law Center has advocated and litigated for children’s health and educational needs, including the health and educational needs of children with disabilities and mental illness. All children need to be safe in schools. We stand ready to assist you as a resource so that the debate will result in just that.
We join you, the Commonwealth and nation in holding the children and teachers who died, along with their families in our hearts as we grapple with this unimaginable sorrow.”
