Preparing Students with Disabilities for Life after School and the Workplace

Update

The Public Interest Law Center wants to hear from families of Philadelphia students with IEPs

Transition services are crucial for preparing students with disabilities to take the next steps in their life, whether that be college, employment, or daily living. A student between the ages of 14-21 who has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is entitled to receive transition services from their school.

As part of our work ensuring that students can receive the support they need, the Law Center recently filed a Due Process Complaint under the IDEA on behalf of an 18-year-old student in the School District of Philadelphia. In the complaint, we assert the student was denied a free and appropriate public education, including that he did not receive transition services to prepare him for work or college.

If you are a family in the School District of Philadelphia who wants to learn more about their student’s right to receive transition services, contact us for more information by calling Equal Justice Works Fellow Darlene Hemerka at 267-546-1314 or fill out an online request form at: https://pubintlaw.org/get-help-english/. We are particularly interested in connecting with families of 11th and 12th graders who want to work after high school and who have concerns that their student is not work ready.
