In March 2011, a hearing officer ordered LMSD to reimburse the family of GJ, a student with average intelligence whose parents disagreed with the educational evaluation provided by the school and asked LMSD for an independent evaluation. The hearing officer ruled that LMSD parents are entitled to an independent evaluation because the school evaluation did not include input from GJ’s parents, nor did it include any in-class observation, both of which would have helped G.J.’s educational team plan for and provide necessary supports.
