Powell v. Ridge

The Law Center Filed the Case

The Law Center filed Powell v. Ridge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, alleging that the way in which Pennsylvania funds its public schools discriminated against predominantly minority school districts. The case garnered national attention, promising a new legal tool that could be used to compel states to finally take action against the persistent educational achievement gap between white and minority students.

The state argued that the plaintiffs had failed to state a legitimate legal complaint, and even in the face of multiple briefs from the U.S. Justice Department, the Court accepted the state’s argument and dismissed the case.
